Think BiG. Really Big?

Think Big- john c. dovorak gives his two cents on large format printers.

do you have one? are you planning to buy one?

i must say that the quality of digital photography is amazing and the convenience factor is a huge plus. i own a canon rebel 2000 and the canon S400 compact digital camera. they both take great pictures, and i love the compact design (suprise, design matters) of my S400. it is a shame that i have yet to purchase a “photo-quality” printer, which i define as a printer that is made to print pictures/high quality docments (including but not limited to illustrations, scanned art, page layout proofs [hopefully ataining relatively accurate process color depictions although most photo quality printers use more than four colors and up to seven], ect.) but i digress.

large format?

is 13X19 large format? not to printing professionals, as most spreads are three times the surface area, but printing a borderless 13X19 picture is very large. the price could be equally as large. one printer that is capable of borderless 13X19 is the epson 2200(previous link). the advantages are obvious, the dissadvantages are subtle. they are a must for pros and a glimmer iin the eye of the enthusiast.

From the eyes of a pro

border-less prints are not just a dream for all of those standerd size jobs. no wasted paper on tabloid paper for a letter size with bleed. just print it and your ready to mount, display, mail, whatever you need. sound to easy? it might be. why?

well, a designer might be persuaed to ues the same document sizes consistantly (path of least resistance) unless directed by another (a boss, client…). breaking from the 8.5X11 mold might not be an easy thing to do, but it is nessacary. innovation and creativity sets one designer on another level from another designer using clipart, templates and other no nos. i dont want to suggest that a printer has such power over its user. its just something to be aware of.
