As a designer, do you find that, when designing or brainstorming, you tend to have some music playing? Is there a certain type of music you listen to while designing, perhaps of a genre you don’t usually listen to? Is there a link between music and visual design?
I read a recent How Design article on how music effects the brain and it really seems to be intriguing. The fact that music in itself is a creative entity is not a secret. I find, however, music to be inspirational to design. It is like having an issue of Communication Arts magazine, and browsing other designers work for a spark of additional creativity or ideas. A tune creates a, so called, pallet of colors in the mind.
The research being compiled on the impact of sound on creativity should be a promising tool to increase our creative brain-waves. Some days I really need more brain-waves than others. The theory is that your brain begins to keep in time with the music. So a speedy techno beat could help you get more work done, but will a calm Brahms slow down your mouse?
If you are having a bad day in the creative department, turn on you favorite tune. If you do that already, discuss how it seems to impact you. When I’m in a poor mood next time, I’m going to put on some of my favorite beats.
I’m just browsing around your site for the first time, interesting read
