Graphically
Speaking* by Lisa Buchanan is a top-notch reference to have on hand, especially
during the early stages of the creative process. It can help you focus on a
design style and examine if it is really the best visual to communicate a certain
message.
I tend to gravitate toward certain styles more than others, but it is extremely
important to be flexible when it comes to trying something outside a comfort
zone.
For example, designing with an elegant style is not the most comfortable thing
for me to do. However, Graphically Speaking divides it’s examples into
style categories, and there is one for an elegant style. That section starts
with good color combinations and typefaces to try, a definition of the style,
and similar sections (related styles) to compare. Then the book presents various
example pieces of designs done with an elegant style. From labels to identity
packages and signage, each piece applies the style in different ways to spark
some ideas, no matter what type of project one may be working on.
I personally use it all the time and it is the most used reference book on
my shelf.
* I was not aware of this book when I created this blog. Just coincidence I
guess.
Thanks, Michael, it never hurts to add another book to my library. Especially one that contributes to creativity.
On that note, Whack on the Side of the Head by Roger Van Och is a great book about creativity, but not about design necessarily. It can be applied to any avenues of creative expression.
Kartooner, that’s a good suggestion. I know some who could use that on their person at all times.
I really wish that books were cheaper… So much money can go into such a small investment….
