When I was a youngster, elementary school age, EPCOT was my favorite park. I wasn’t into the
roller coasters or ‘scary’ rides at the Magic Kingdom. No, I loved Seabase Alpha,
riding the Hydrolator
to the depths of the ocean, and listening to The Land. EPCOT has always been
more than a zoo or some type of technology convention; it’s an educational place
to learn and have some fun. Granted, now that I’m older I don’t view the attractions
as I used to and they are changing too. Test Track was a great addition to the
park, and I still enjoy zipping around in those spiffy cars.

Technology has been the theme of EPCOT’s Future World, displaying the
robotic lawn mower and utilizing hydroponics. With such a unique concept for
a theme park, or portion of one, these pavilions required some unique graphical
representations. The logos needed to unify the various pavilions yet differentiate
their technological focus. The designers assigned to that project came up with
some fantastic work that remains an excellent example of graphic design. They
should be freely seen and analyzed.

After displaying my Retro
Disney Resort Logos, I had received some inquiries on where more of these
retro logos could be found or when I would be redrawing some more. Well, I haven’t
redrawn any logos yet but I have found an excellent source for your
favorite Retro EPCOT Logos.

I’ve known about Mickey
Avenue’s Disney Fonts for about a year now. In fact I created an Alien
Encounter desktop wallpaper using one of their typefaces based upon that
used at the Alien Encounter attraction.

One of their fonts, Prototype
Community, includes every one of the original EPCOT Future World pavilion
logos, some of which are pictured above. The nice thing about having them as
a downloadable True Type font is that anyone can download and use them in just
about any program, from Text Pad to Illustrator. All of the logos are high quality
accurate renderings.

I’m honestly not sure how many people know about the Disney
Fonts site, but they have some really fun stuff, including more great vector
art. If you like what they have provided, please send them an e-mail with your
comments. I’m sure they would greatly appreciate the recognition.

If you do happen to produce something with any of these Disney logos, including
the previous Retro Disney Resort Logos, please let us know in the comments.
Show off your creative Disney related work!

We live in an age where logos can be found virtually everywhere; they’re
on the bottom of our shoes, the front of our hats, in the middle of the steering
wheel of every vehicle. Even if you live out in the middle of nowhere you are,
most likely, exposed to hundreds of logos each day.

Even while I write this now I can glance at dozens of logos in my room. Lucas
Books, Orbit, Altoids, Samsung, Microsoft, EA Games, Oakley logos are all in
view and I haven’t had to turn my head.

For a moment, just see what kinds of logos are directly around you. Surprised?

A Case Study

Tiger
Woods is the number one professional golfer in the world. In addition, he
endorses clubs and sells cars. But Tiger also has his own identity. What does
his marketing staff use it on? His yearly console and PC golf game games display
the logo, Nike produces Tiger Woods clothing and accessories, and I’m sure he
has a business card with his logo. If he ever decides to break his Nike relationship
he could start his own line of golf equipment, apparel, and accessories fairly
quickly.

Creating an identity for a sports star might not be a no brainier. However,
if they want to make money in different avenues away from the playing field,
I would suggest obtaining a personal identity straight away.

What are your thoughts of current sports player’s identities? And what do you
foresee for the future of sports branding?

Many things have changed since the beginning. Quite a debate/discussion could be started
on that topic alone, Change at Walt Disney World.

To dabble a bit in the nostalgic past of Disney World I recreated a couple
of what I think are the original resort logos (if anyone actually knows for
sure, please confirm). “Where did I obtain the reference for these logos?”
you ask. Matchbooks. I found them quite worn and wanted to capture the glorious
art to be seen for all time.

I scanned in the matchbook covers and traced the logos in Illustrator, being
careful to keep the original art intact. After I finished it, I displayed it
on Flickr, the web’s newest toy, and posted
it in the Disney Geeks group.
Someone recommended I put the Illustrator file up somewhere on the web. “Great
idea,” I thought.

Feel free
to download the Illustrator file (v 10.0).

Branding is everywhere. International tourist destinations are branding themselves too. Hong Kong has a well done logo that captures the orient vibe. One of the identities that really interested me was the Bahamas newly formed identity.

Colorful, To Say The Least

Although it could translate well into a one or two color design, the Bahamas’ logo definitely screams variety in its color selection. Its uses of varying colors and shapes really tells a story. The Bahamas are made up of more than 400 individual islands, thus the variation in color and shapes. The form the group of shapes makes resembles that of the group of islands.

I’m sure the designers working on the logo also wanted to convey a variety of activities. Suggesting that a location has “something for everyone” is not the best margin of difference, but many marketers seem to use it, possibly as a last resort (no pun intended).

Taking a bold presence among other logos, the Bahamas’ logo is something different; it’s a refreshing breeze of ocean air.

I have just discovered a blog that will be on the top of my reading list. Airbag, and its author, has a great style. Earlier this month Greg Storey wrote about style and selling, titled Soap to Nuts.

Method soap products are sold in very attractive packages. The labels are minimal. However, the shapes of the containers are certainly modern. The founder basically designed the brand, and thought about the product after the fact. Quite a gamble; it worked.

As you might have guessed, Method’s products are priced higher than the off brand in the green plastic. It is obvious their targeting persons that don’t want just any plastic soap container sitting next to the kitchen sink. I wonder how well it does as an impulse purchase. I’m guessing most that buy it for the first time never saw the product before; if it’s sitting on a store shelf, it’s hard to overlook.

So soap is soap is soap, but design is not design is not design. Design sells, but all designs are not equal; it’s still about target audience. The moral of the story is, you can take Martha Stewart to the Method soap, but you can’t make her wash up.
